Sandhurst Road Bridge Project
Four HND Fine Art Students (Emma Richardson,
Luke Wilson, Paul Sharp and Rachael Lloyd) from Bedford College
were commissioned to paint a mural on Sandhurst Road Railway Bridge
in Bedford as the first stage in a local improvement project by
Bedford Borough Council.
The mural’s design was based on the River Ouse
and incorporated recognisable landmarks from the local environment
such as the bridges, the gasworks and the churches that form part
of the skyline. Line drawings of Bedford people (including Paula
Radcliffe) were also made into stencils supplied by Glasgow based
company: Laser Cutting Stencils Ltd.
The unpredictable weather conditions did
create some problems for the team, but the project was delivered on
time and under budget. The mural has now been painted with an
anti-graffiti coating, so hopefully the students’ artwork shall be
enjoyed for years to come!
The official launch party of the newly
renovated bridge is planned for July 2011.
Special thanks to Laser Cutting Stencils Ltd http://lasercuttingstencils.co.uk for
their support in the project.
