Working in the outdoor adventure sports industry means you'll always be part of a huge team effort – whether it's providing activities such as raft-building, canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding (Paddlesports), Sailing, windsurfing and powerboating (we are an RYA (Royal Yachting Association) training school) and rock-climbing to school and youth groups, working in corporate training or as a sports development officer.

Why choose us?

You’ll be able to specialise in subjects including water and land-based outdoor and adventurous activities, expeditions, sports coaching, equipment and facilities for the outdoor sector. As well as our facilities at Shuttleworth College, we also use external venues such as Grafham Water Sailing Club, Big Rock Climbing Centre and the local footpaths and waterways.

You will be involved in a rotation of practical activities on a weekly basis. These will focus on sailing, kayaking, canoeing and climbing. Alongside this you will study a wide range of theoretical and practical units associated with the principles and practices of outdoor adventure, skills development, coaching and leadership.

The courses will help you to develop the skills needed within the industry, as well as offering a range of qualifications that will help you progress your career by gaining employment or moving on to higher education.

Shuttleworth College has beautiful, spacious surroundings in which you can develop your outdoor education skills. As well as the natural resources, there is also a sports hall, gym, stunning sailing lakes, and outdoor sports pitches for football, rugby and cricket on site.

Our lecturers and instructors have a wide range of experience as instructors, coaches, teachers and outdoor practitioners. Their knowledge, experience and passion for the outdoors gives an extra dimension to the theory-based and practical sessions, along with providing you with relevant guidance on potential career options.

What can I do next?

Student success

You will have the opportunity to attend residential trips to centres such as Outward Bound in the Lake District and the United Kingdom Sailing Academy on the Isle of Wight. You will also be required to plan and undertake expeditions; in the past these have included canoeing in Snowdonia and mountaineering in the Lake District.

The programmes will help you to develop the skills needed within the industry, as well as offering a range of qualifications that will help you progress your career by gaining employment or moving on to higher education.
